Delphi Automotive Autonomous Copilot
2015

CLIENTS
SoarTech | Delphi Automotive

RESPONSIBILITIES
Conceptualization | Visual Design | Motion Design

OVERVIEW
SoarTech, an automotive artificial intelligence company, partnered with Delphi Automotive to create one of the first fully-functional "autonomous co-pilot" systems. This system had proven successful twice, once piloting the longest automated drive (from San Francisco to New York), and then again during the busiest time of year (CES) in Las Vegas.

PROBLEM
SoarTech reached out to me to design and animate five videos to compliment a private, invitation-only experience at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The company had wanted a way to show press, investors and OEM, an easily digestible way of understanding what was happening behind the scenes, real-time during the autonomous driving process.

The client had a general idea of what they wanted, but only six weeks to deliver something that was driven in-part by another studios animation and undefined millisecond timing on the engineers part.

APPROACH
With only six weeks to deliver, I reached out to two additional After Effects gurus in my network, one to create scripts that saved me months of manual labor ( timing changes that affected several other comps), and another to sync the beats and timing from the script, storyboard, and the other studio's daily animatics, while I worked on the layout, visual style and transitions.

I spent the first two weeks working with the client on developing mood boards, doing competitive and comparative analysis, performing deep-dive research on technology, and designing layouts on hierarchical visual balance and structure. I brought on one artist to work on all five "Awareness of Environment" animations, I designed and animated complimenting side/extended components, while the third artist wrote scripts to tie anywhere from 7-10 pre-comps together in perfect synchronization.

RESULTS
Because this was being shown on the floor at CES, there was no time for schedule changes and early approvals and lock-down was imperative. The contractors where incredibly accommodating working on a 25/8 schedule to deliver this high-profile endeavor.

The client (SoarTech) were incredibly excited to have gotten something that was thoroughly embraced by their client (Delphi Automotive) and the press alike. This lead to another immediate engagement to create digital and print graphics for the booth, a presentation deck, and later, other forward-thinking engagements.

Soartech has since spun up its own AI division, SoarAI, focused on self driving automobiles; and Delphi Automotive has since renamed itself Aptiv.
