OVERVIEW
Carnival Corporation was looking to re-imagine the cruise experience for passengers and crew, incorporating some of the latest technologies including IoT, mesh-beacon networks, mobile devices and touchscreen monitors.

The Carnival OceanMedallion program will enable guests to be treated to hyper-personalized experiences; from ordering a drink on your phone (and it being brought to you anywhere that you might be), giving recommendations based upon past purchases/activities, to ensuring key-less access to your stateroom.

PROBLEM
Traditional ship mustering (also known as Safety Assembly) is an mandatory drill performed to familiarize passengers and crew on where to assemble in the unlikely event of an emergency. It is coast guard regulatory requirement that everyone on-board has to take this within 30 to 60 minutes before embarkation.

From a crew perspective, it is a time consuming process, using archaic analog processes including phones, hand-held radios, marker boards, clipboards, that hadn't been changed in decades. From a passenger perspective, it is a little bit of chaos, mixed in with a lot of hurry up and wait.

APPROACH
I came into this project in the latter part of the research phase, after a team members had already recorded information from the crew and had taken several photos and videos of the procedure as it currently exists. I did extensive research on the maritime laws and how competitive cruise lines were performing their mustering drills.

My short time spent on this project was to evaluate all the cost vs time benefits of each stage, as well as concept and storyboard a modernized way to expedite the procedure.

It was a given introducing the OceanReady mobile component for crew tablets and passenger mobile, but I found that incentivizing passengers to watch videos and take quizzes prior to the cruise, could offset time spent on ship performing this required task.

RESULTS
When launched, the OceanMedallion sped up the check-in process at muster stations during the safety practice, shaving around 15 minutes off the drill.*

This will be offered as a new procedure throughout all the Carnival brands going forward that implements this technology.

ADDENDUM
When arriving onto the project, the internal stakeholder suggested I come up with a few AR/VR ideas that can take place both on-board and off-ship, that might be proposed to Carnival.

I concepted out several ideas including: a brief of the concept, the hardware/software needing the run the experience, production, cost, deployment, time/effort and return on investment (ROI). Unfortunately we were so focused on the current tasks and new requests, that these remained parked.
